The FON Community extends its WiFi coverage throughout Tokyo

FON Japan and Livedoor have joined forces to extend the FON Community throughout Tokyo. From now until August 4, 2008, all of Livedoor’s 2,200 hotspots in Tokyo’s 23 wards (covering 80% of the area inside the Yamanote Line, one of Tokyo's busiest and most important commuter lines Tokyo) will now emit a signal called “FON_livedoor”.

To celebrate this joint service, FON will launch an additional “Free Access Campaign” from February 4 to April 4th, and allow even non FON members to connect to all Japanese FON Spots including the “FON_livedoor” ones for free.

A New Year, A New FON

The new FON comes with incredible Community tools for all of you!

A messaging system, our redesigned FON Maps, and an improved User Zone (now called “My FON”) with personalized features will make your FON experience even better.

The messaging system allows you to communicate with other Foneros, including those who connect to your FON Spot, the owners of FON Spots you connect to, and your friends who are also Foneros. You can also personalize your profile in the User Zone with an avatar, and your nickname and avatar will appear with your FON Spot on the FON Maps.

You’ll love our new FON Maps. We have defined new filters to refine your search and have improved the download speed to make finding WiFi quicker and easier.

Last, but not least, we have also redesigned the User Zone so that it is now easier to find the new Community tools. Log into your “My FON” (formerly User Zone) to take a look at these new features and enjoy the new FON for yourself!!

Download the FON Spots for a city or a country directly to your GPS or PDA

FON offers you a new Points of Interest service (POIs). This allows you to download FON Spots directly to your navigation device.

What does that mean? You can download a Points of Interest file directly to your navigation device. Then you can have your Tom Tom in your passenger seat guiding you directly to the nearest FONspot!

Download the POIs to the most common navigation devices: For GPS Exchange Format (.gpx), for Garmin and Navman (.csv), for Tom Tom (.ov2) or even for Google Earth (.kml)

Most GPSs, PDAs and other navigation devices allow you to store POI data. A Point of Interest shows the location of a restaurant, Gas Station, and now a FONspot on your navigation device’s maps. Finding a FONspot was never this easy!
