Introducing BT FON, WiFi everywhere in the U.K.
Yep, that’s right! FON and BT have partnered to create the BT FON Community to cover the entire U.K. with hundreds of thousands of BT FON Spots. By integrating FON into BT’s broadband platform, BT subscribers can now share their WiFi like the rest of us.
From the beginning we Foneros have believed in the concept of sharing and in citizens' ability to participate in building something important that would benefit everyone. We are excited to have BT, one of the most important telcos and ISPs in the world, partner with us in our Movimiento. BT FON represents a huge leap forward in the Fonero goal of making WiFi available anytime, anywhere!

Fiesta Très Cool in Paris to Launch the Neuf WiFi FON Service
Neuf, one of France’s major ISPs, has installed FON’s firmware into its modem routers, enabling its clients to activate the FON WiFi platform and features, share their WiFi with Foneros around the globe, and get free WiFi access on all FON Spots everywhere.
More than six hundred guests attended the Fiesta including FON and Neuf Cegetel’s CEOs, as well as their friends from the OpenSource community such as Mozilla Europe, Ubuntu, and Mandriva. The guests enjoyed an “eat-til-you-drop” Tapas buffet and a “drink-til-you-run-with-bulls” Sangria bar. They also all received FON’s spanking new t-shirt.
Best of all, there are already more than 10,000 Neuf WiFi FON Spots in France. We're well on our way to reaching 100,000 by Christmas!

Located in the heart of Madrid’s Chueca neighborhood, theMercado de Fuencarralis a different kind of shopping mall. The Mercado is filled with small boutique shops managed and staffed by young entrepreneurs who have joined forces to offer an alternative shopping experience to Madrid’s citizens and visitors. Through FON’sChuecaWiFiproject, the Mercado de Fuencarral, has joined the Movimiento!
“We first heard of FON with the ChuecaWiFi initiative and were asked to become part of the Project. We loved the idea because the Mercado de Fuencarral was the ideal place for WiFi, and unlike other places with cafes, we do not rush our customers out to free their tables for others. We have since personalized ourFON Spot homepage so that people can connect to our website for free and check out our own promotional video. We also passed out flyers to promote our FON Spot and have seen that besides our customers, our neighbors are connecting to our FON Spot even when the shops have all closed down.
The Mercado de Fuencarral is perfect for the FON Movimiento. People shop and relax here because we offer a laid back and alternative setting based on the idea of community and self expression.”

“I'm from New Zealand, age 20, starting a PhD in mathematics in October in the UK. I lived in a tiny apartment in Japan for four months, and my only contact with the outside world was the Internet. Before I arrived I thought I'd have to use an internet cafe, which would probably be expensive and not in English and far from where I was staying, but to my delight I found I had a wireless connection in my room through FON. I could also use my own laptop, and not have to worry about learning to use a foreign computer. Looking back on it now I don't know how I could have survived without FON.”
TIPS & TRICKS
Connecting to FON Spots with FON Passes
When you have already purchased a pack of Passes and then are ready to use one or more of them, you should follow these basic steps:
- When your WiFi device detects a FON WiFi sign, connect to the FON_AP signal.
- When the FON Spot welcome page appears, login to FON using your username and password.
- Click “Buy Passes”
- Click the payment method of your choice (visa/paypal/mastercard)
- Click “Check your Fon WiFI Credit status here”
- Click the “connect and use FON one day pass” button and click “accept”.
Now you are ready to surf the Internet!
Firefox Add-On for the FON Maps
Install the add-on and then whenever you enter a zip code in the Firefox search engine box you’ll be transported to that location on the FON Maps. Download the Firefox add-on here.
